Veterans Day annually honors military veterans. It is celebrated on the eleventh day of the eleventh month to commemorate the formal ending of World War I in 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice. A national celebration is held each year at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington DC commencing with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns at precisely 11 a.m. It continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater and includes a parade of colors by veterans' organizations and remarks from dignitaries.
Originally known as Armistice Day the celebration honored WWI veterans. It was expanded in 1954 by an act of Congress to honor all veterans. It recognizes those who served for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
The program at Collins will include patriotic music, a visit by U.S. Congressman Mo Brooks and recognition of at least five local service members who were awarded either the Silver Star or Navy Cross. They include: W.A. Austin, Harry Campbell, James E. Guffey, Rayford Hodges Latham and Houston L. Maples.
