The fire broke out this afternoon in the 1700 block of West Altgeld Avenue. It affected three 2½ story frame houses, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Quention Curtis.
"Due to heavy winds, we had exposure problems to the buildings on both sides," Chicago Fire Cmsr. Bob Hoff said on the scene. "Ordinarily this wouldn't have been much of a fire, but the winds accelerated it."
Hoff said one firefighter twisted an ankle after slipping on a set of stairs and another got an electric shock. Neither injury was considered serious.
Firefighters searched the buildings on the ends of the row of three and found no occupants, but wind has prevented them from fully searching the middle building, which was most heavily damaged, Hoff said.
More than 100 firefighters and 48 pieces of equipment were used in fighting the blaze.
Brothers Jack and Joe Neal and their babysitter had a hard time getting home from school Wednesday afternoon near the fire, as the streets were clogged with fire trucks.
