Okefenokee sugar cane boil Saturday
The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge will host a traditional sugar cane boil 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Chesser Island Homestead at refuge headquarters off Georgia 121 south of Folkston.
Visitors can help grind the cane with a mule-powered grinder and sample the sweet cane juice at its freshest. They can also watch as the juice is boiled down to make deep amber cane syrup, a prized topping for biscuits like those that will be baked in the wood stove at the homestead.
Visitors can also get a glimpse of how the pioneer “swamper” families like the Chessers lived in the swamp.
A $5 entry fee will be charged for each vehicle except for those who have the America the Beautiful, senior, access or refuge annual passes. The fee is good for seven days.
